More innovation in Italy

On October 2, in Milan, Ennio Lucarelli, president of ASSINFORM (the Italian Association for Information Technology) presented the association’s report on the Italian IT industry in the first half of 2006. The report shows growth in GDP, and fixed investment, as well as in investment for new machinery and equipment. But the sector which is developing fastest is Information Technology, which continues its recovery. In the first six months of 2006, overall turnover (9,758 million euro) grew by 1.1% (compared to 0.4% in the first half of 2006). Telecommunications also continued to grow, though lower rates meant that volumes grew faster than sales. For instance, the number of broadband connections grew by 37% while growth in turnover amounted to just 0.6%. Although Italian IT is expanding at a slower rate than IT in the rest of the world (which has achieved annual growth rates of more than 5%), Lucarelli thinks the recent results are significant. “What they mean is that Italy is using innovation to get back on the road to growth”. There is rapidly expanding demand for IT, not just from the consumer sector, but also from service industries – banking, insurance, supermarket chains. Medium sized companies and local government are also investing.
