Internet Governance Forum 2006

The “Internet Governance Forum” is an initiative set in motion by Kofi Annan, the Secretary General of the United Nations. The forum is a follow-up to the World Summit on the Information Society, held in Tunis in November 2005. It will take place in the Greek capital, Athens, from October 30 to November 2, and will be sponsored by the Greek Ministries for Transport and for Communications. The Forum will have four main themes: freedom of expression, security, respect for diversity, and universal access. The Greek government has worked with UN staff for many months to define the program and to choose speakers and expects the event to play a major role in raising awareness of Internet-related issues among UN member states. To coordinate Italy’s line of action, Luigi Nicolais, the Minister for Reform and Innovation in the Public Administration, has set up a Committee of experts. The committee, is chaired by Stefano Rodotà, ex-chief of Italy’s Privacy Authority and started its work in August.
As part of its duties, it will assist the Ministry in a major online public consultation exercise. The Ministry hopes that this exercise will help to raise public awareness of the key themes under discussion at the forum.
